XM-19 (Nitronic 50) - High-Strength Austenitic Stainless Steel
XM-19, also known by its commercial name Nitronic 50, is an austenitic stainless steel alloy primarily known for its high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and ability to resist wear and galling. It is a nitrogen-strengthened steel that provides a combination of strength and toughness, making it ideal for a wide range of applications, including marine, chemical, and food processing environments. XM-19’s higher strength compared to conventional austenitic stainless steels and its excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion make it suitable for critical applications in industries where high performance is required.
Features of XM-19 (Nitronic 50):
- Superior Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to general corrosion, pitting, and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride environments, making it suitable for marine and chemical applications.
- High Strength: Higher tensile and yield strength compared to standard 300-series austenitic stainless steels, providing greater durability and performance under stress.
- Wear and Galling Resistance: XM-19 offers excellent resistance to wear and galling, which helps extend the service life of components subject to friction and abrasive wear.
- High Toughness: Despite its high strength, XM-19 maintains good toughness, making it suitable for impact-resistant applications.
- Non-Magnetic: XM-19 is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, which is beneficial in applications where magnetic permeability is a concern.
- Good Weldability: It can be welded by conventional welding methods (TIG, MIG, etc.), making it easy to fabricate
- High Temperature Resistance: XM-19 offers good resistance to oxidation and maintains its strength at elevated temperatures.
Specifications:
- UNS S20910 (Unified Numbering System designation for XM-19)
- ASTM A276 (Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes)
- ASTM A312 (Standard Specification for Seamless, Welded, and Heavily Cold Worked Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipes)
- ASTM A240 (Standard Specification for Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet, and Strip for Pressure Vessels and for General Applications)
- ASME SA240
- EN 1.3964
These specifications confirm the alloy’s applicability for various applications requiring high strength and corrosion resistance, including in the marine, chemical, and aerospace industries.
