Product Description:
420B stainless steel is a high-carbon, martensitic stainless steel that offers a good balance of hardness, strength, and corrosion resistance. It is part of the 400 series of stainless steels, which are characterized by their ability to be hardened by heat treatment. The “B” in 420B is often used to distinguish this alloy variant, as it is designed for applications that require a combination of corrosion resistance and the ability to achieve high hardness through heat treatment.
Features:
- Good Corrosion Resistance: While not as resistant to corrosion as higher-chromium stainless steels, 420B offers moderate corrosion resistance in mild environments and is suitable for use in moderate corrosive conditions.
- High Hardness and Wear Resistance: After heat treatment, 420B can achieve very high hardness, making it suitable for cutting tools, knives, and other applications requiring wear resistance.
- Magnetic: Unlike austenitic stainless steels, 420B is magnetic, making it suitable for applications where magnetism is required or for use in magnetic assemblies.
- Good Strength: 420B provides excellent strength after hardening, making it useful for structural applications.
- Ease of Heat Treatment: It is easy to heat treat, allowing for fine control over hardness and mechanical properties based on the desired application.
- Polishability: 420B stainless steel can be polished to a high finish, making it useful in decorative applications as well as functional ones.
Specifications:
- ASTM A276: Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes, which includes the specifications for 420B stainless steel.
- UNS S42000: The Unified Numbering System designation for 420B stainless steel, confirming its classification and standardization in stainless steel materials.
- ISO 683-2: Standard for heat-treatable steels and special steels, ensuring that 420B meets the necessary criteria for heat treatment and hardening processes.
